How to Plant Containers in Six Easy Steps

Cover large drainage holes
If the drainage holes in your pots are more than 2.5 cm (1 inch) in diameter, put some rocks or terra cotta pots (crushed terra cotta) over them to keep the compost from falling out. If the drainage holes are small, no covering is necessary.

Putting compost into containers
Fill the container with compost up to where the root ball of the plant is (preferably about 5 cm (2 inches) below the rim) and then gently press it down.

Remove the plant from the nursery pot and place it in the container
Consider the angle from which you are looking at the container - if it is a pot against a wall or fence, you will usually want the plants at the back to be taller; if it is a freestanding container viewed from all sides, you may want the plants in the center to be taller. Remember that trees and shrubs usually have a "front" or "best side".

Filling gaps around plants
Add peat-free compost around the plants and gently compact it to fill in the gaps. Leaving a small gap between the top of the compost and the top of the container will prevent the compost from spilling out when you water.

Water well
Water slowly and thoroughly to soak the compost. Use a rose or hose at the end of the watering can to spray water delicately so as not to stain the compost. If you get compost on your leaves during planting, just spray them lightly with water.

Covering bare compost
If desired, add a layer of mulch to the top of the compost. This works well for single trees or shrubs planted in pots, as they will expose a lot of bare compost. A layer of gravel, rocks, or bark chips helps to moisturize, suppress weeds, and looks great.
