Benefits of using weathering steel for bridge construction
For structures exposed to the elements, such as bridges, weathering steel offers real advantages over other metals.
Corrosion Resistance: Due to its chemical composition, weathering steel forms a protective patina that prevents corrosion in the right environment. In fact, corrosion rates are so low that bridges made of unpainted weathering steel can achieve a design life of 120 years with minimal maintenance.
Blends well with the outdoors: The unpainted appearance of weathering steel blends well with gardens, backyards, parks and other outdoor environments where bridges are needed. Initially, weathering steel bridge panels are orange-brown in color, but the color changes to a darker brown over time as patina begins to form.
No Field Painting Required: By eliminating field painting operations, the use of weathering steel in bridge construction reduces construction time.
Requires Minimal Maintenance: Regular inspections and cleaning should be the only maintenance required to ensure that weathering steel structures continue to perform well. This characteristic makes weathering steel ideal for bridges that are difficult to navigate and where damage needs to be minimized.
It is a cost-effective alternative: maintenance requirements are minimal and no painting is required, greatly reducing the cost of bridge construction. In fact, the cost of building bridges with weathering steel is about 5% less than with conventional painted steel.
