Weathering steel is a steel alloy designed to resist rust and form a protective layer on its surface. This layer helps protect the steel from corrosion, rust, and other forms of damage. Unfortunately, due to its unique composition, weathering steel is difficult to clean without damaging it. Fortunately, with the right knowledge and supplies, cleaning weathering steel doesn't have to be a daunting task.
What you need.
Before you begin cleaning weathering steel, you'll need to gather a few supplies. First, you'll need a soft-bristled brush or a cloth to scrub with - any abrasive material can damage the weathering steel's protective coating. You'll also need a mild detergent or soap to remove dirt and grime, as well as some water to rinse off the soap residue.

Cleaning Weathering Steel
Once you've gathered all your supplies, it's time to start cleaning! Begin by lightly moistening the area of the weathering steel with water (you don't want it to get too wet and drip). Then mix one part detergent/soap with water in a bucket or bowl, stirring until foam appears. Dip your brush into this mixture and gently scrub off any dirt or grime from the weathering steel surface in a circular motion. After removing all visible dirt, rinse off any remaining soap residue with water - you may need to use a hose, depending on how large the area you're cleaning is. Finally, allow the weathering steel to air dry completely before performing any further maintenance activities, such as painting or rustproofing.
