Most plants need proper drainage to thrive. While using a planter with drainage holes is not the only way to ensure that your plants survive, it is one of the easiest ways to ensure that your plants don't die from overwatering.
Overwatering is usually the reason most plant owners inadvertently kill their plants. Any water that accumulates at the bottom of the pot can kill the plant by causing bacteria and fungi to form and lead to root rot.
While every plant owner should be aware of the care and watering needs of their plants, drainage holes in planters allow excess water to seep out.

Do outdoor planters need drainage holes?
In rare cases, outdoor planters should be used without drainage holes. Outdoor planters can withstand sun, rain, snow, and all the weather in between. When they fill with water from inclement weather, the extra weight and bulk can cause them to break. In colder climates, water can freeze, expand and damage planters.
Drainage holes (especially in outdoor planters) are key to ensuring that plants aren't overwatered and that planters stay intact in harsh conditions.
Do indoor planters need drainage holes?
Lush plants need proper light, soil, water and drainage. However, most people don't want excess water leaking onto their floors or furniture from planters with drainage holes.
If you want indoor plants, then your indoor planter does not necessarily need to have drainage holes 100% of the time. However, proper drainage is key if you want your plants to thrive. Here are some ways to make sure your plants have proper humidity without the need for traditional planter drainage holes.
