Many homeowners purchase stoves for their elegance, beauty, and old-fashioned appeal without realizing that they will also have access to an efficient, powerful heating source. When used properly, modern wood-burning stoves are capable of heating an entire house.

Choosing the right stove for your home
First, you need to choose the right size wood burning stove for your home. It is important to consult with a professional to ensure that the stove you purchase is efficient and will be able to heat your home adequately.

While your grandparents' wood-burning stoves may have been only 40% efficient, today's stoves have come a long way. Some stoves are now upwards of 80% efficient, which means that more of the heat produced by the fire is being used to heat your home, rather than being vented down the chimney.

In January 2019, the government launched its new Clean Air Strategy, which includes a ban on the sale of the least efficient wood-burning stoves. From this date, all newly manufactured stoves must be at least 70% efficient and meet strict emission limits.

Our popular 5kW Multi Fuel environmentally friendly stoves are up to 82.5% efficient, with a heat output of 5kW.All our stoves are made from thick sheet steel for durability and maximum heat retention. With a stove that meets environmental design requirements, you can enjoy all the benefits of a solid wood fire while reducing your carbon footprint and doing your bit for the environment.

Ensure the fire is set correctly
A woodstove is only as good as the fire that burns in it. If the fire isn't strong or big enough, the woodstove won't be able to heat your home effectively, so it's vital to know how to build a good fire. Let's take a look at the steps you need to take:

First, you need to use dry, air-dried wood with a moisture content of 20% or less. This wood burns hotter and produces less smoke. If you use damp or green wood, the fire will be colder and more soot may build up in the chimney.

Once you have chosen your wood, you are ready to begin. Start by opening the damper all the way; this will help ensure that your fire receives enough oxygen to produce a hot and efficient flame. Don't worry if there is a slight buildup of ash from previously used firewood; this will help insulate the heat and keep the fire burning brighter. Be aware, however, that too much ash can impede airflow, so be sure to remove some if necessary.

Place a few split logs in the center of the stove and build a small tent with some smaller firewood. Then, light the firewood with a long match or lighter. Once the flames start to burn, close the door to the stove (but don't leave it closed all the way) and give it some time to build a fire.
