There's nothing like inviting friends and family over for a drink or a meal and chatting around the fire in the evening. But it can also be frustrating if you're sitting in the wrong spot and the smoke is overwhelming.

Modern natural gas firepits have become a growing trend in the fire pit market. There are several fire pits on the market today that advertise themselves as smoke-free, promising that no one will sit in a smoky seat. But are smokeless fire pits really feasible?

It is not possible to completely eliminate all smoke from a fire, especially when it is first ignited. Therefore, when considering this concept, think "smoke reduction" rather than "smoke-free." If you want to understand the science behind it, the double-layered fire ring used in modern smokeless fire pits increases air circulation and reduces smoke production. There are holes in the ring near the top of the inner wall and holes in the bottom of the outer wall. When the fire is lit, air is drawn into the fire pit through the outer wall, and the fire pit heats up as the air touches the inner wall.

The hotter the fire, the more smoke there is. As the air rises between the walls, this hot air eventually squeezes along the opening at the top of the inner wall and expands. This movement acts like an "air pump" that blows hot oxygen into the flame, causing it to expand. The heat generated by this "secondary combustion" causes the smoke particles to burn out before they leave the fire pit.
