Things to Avoid When Cooking on a Gas Fireplace
An important point to keep in mind is that not all gas fireplaces are designed to allow cooking on them.
Many gas fire pits come with additional decorations or designs such as lava rocks, fake wood, safety guards, etc. All of these can make cooking on a gas fire pit more difficult.
The key to cooking on a gas fire pit is to get the food close enough to the heat source. For some fire pits, this is not possible (however, if you just want to toast a marshmallow or two, that's no problem!) .
Also, if there's one thing you want to avoid at all costs, it's getting any kind of food, liquid, or any kind of residue on the valves of your gas fireplace. This is not always easy to do if you are cooking directly over the fire.

Why is it important to avoid this? There are several reasons
Valves can get clogged - this reduces the heat of the fire and decreases its efficiency. For natural gas and propane, there's also the concern that the fuel won't burn as efficiently, which in turn produces carbon monoxide.
Difficult to clean up - Food and debris on a fire can be difficult to clean up because they can scorch metal.
