Weather-resistant steel planters are known for their superior durability and unmatched weather resistance, making them a great solution for protecting plants. The inherent strength of weathering steel allows it to withstand the most extreme weather conditions without compromising its structural integrity.

Is weathering steel safe for growing food/vegetables?
Yes, they are a safe choice for growing food and vegetables, especially for those concerned about potential contamination from treated wood structures or the use of chemicals. Unlike treated wood, weathering steels do not require any painting or chemical treatment, ensuring that no harmful substances leak into the soil and affect the plants. While small amounts of zinc and iron can leach into the soil over time, the levels of these natural minerals are extremely low and won't affect plants in any significant way.
Will weather-resistant steel planters get too hot in the summer?
Steel planters have the ability to conduct heat and may feel warm to the touch after exposure to sunlight. While the soil temperature near the rim of the planter may rise on warm days, you won't have to worry about your plants drying out as long as they are properly watered.
However, if you are concerned about overheating, there are other measures you can take, such as insulating the inside of the planter to avoid direct contact between the soil and the steel. On hot days, you may also want to consider moving smaller planters or those on wheels into the shade to further alleviate potential heat issues.

Drainage and its importance
Proper drainage is essential for healthy plant growth. It helps prevent waterlogged soil, which can lead to root rot. Our range of Corten planters come standard with drainage holes to ensure excess water can drain away. We also offer a raised foot option, which helps to improve drainage, air circulation and prevent pests from entering the pot, further enhancing plant health.
Choosing the right size and shape
Choosing the right pot requires careful consideration of its size based on plant type, growth habit and root range. Larger species such as trees or shrubs require deep, spacious pots to comfortably accommodate their extensive roots. In contrast, smaller plants usually grow well in more compact, shallow containers.
For full-grown plants, we recommend choosing a planter that provides at least an inch of extra space around the current root spread. If you are considering growing multiple plants in a single container, be sure to consider the mature size of each plant to ensure that the pot provides enough room for individual growth. Similarly, for young or newly planted specimens, anticipate their growth and select pots that will accommodate their size at maturity.
While the shape of the pot does not directly affect the health of the plant, certain pot shapes are better suited to specific types of plants, enhancing their natural beauty and complementing their growth habit.
