The service life of Corten steel is affected by many factors, including the environment in which it is placed, the degree of exposure to wet and dry cycles, and the thickness of the steel itself.

Weathering steel, while similar to other carbon steels, has unique properties that set it apart. Initially, weathering steel begins to rust in much the same way as mild steel. However, Corten is unique in that it has a much superior resistance to atmospheric corrosion compared to its counterparts. This enhanced resistance can be attributed to the addition of special alloying elements including chromium, nickel, copper and phosphorus.

One of the defining characteristics of weathering steel is its ability to form a protective patina layer when subjected to alternating wet and dry cycles. This patina is more than just an aesthetic dimension. It acts as a barrier, sealing the steel surface and thus significantly increasing its resistance to further corrosion. Another advantage is that this patina has the ability to repair itself. If the steel is scratched or slightly damaged, the patina in the affected area regenerates, maintaining its protective function.

In summary, a 2 mm thick weathering steel should be about 1 mm thick after 50 years of weathering on both sides in a medium urban environment.
