How do I measure the power output of my wood stove?
Wood stoves are often measured by the amount of BTUs they produce. In many cases, furnace manufacturers will label their furnaces based on the number of square feet they can heat. In general, it takes about 3,000 BTUs of heat per 100 square feet of indoor living area. Therefore, a 1,500-square-foot home would need to purchase a cast iron woodstove that produces 45,000 BTUs of heat. With proper sizing and energy-efficient home construction, a cast iron woodstove can effectively heat a home even in harsh winter climates.
