When designing your ideal outdoor space, every element should contribute to a harmonious and inviting atmosphere. The choice of a Corten Steel Garden Fire Pits is central to this vision.

What "Fit" Really Means

A fire pit fits a garden when it matches the space, the way you will use it, the fuel you can manage, and the maintenance you are willing to accept. Four questions decide it:

  1. How much clear space do I have?
  2. What is the pit for - cooking, warmth, ambience or entertaining?
  3. Wood or propane?
  4. Is the surface below the pit protected?

Space and Scal

  • Compact bowl (60-70 cm): small terraces, balconies, 2-4 people; easily stored.
  • Medium round bowl (70-90 cm): family gardens of roughly 20-50 m2; 4-6 people around the rim.
  • Fire table or full-size pit (90-120 cm): spacious yards; becomes a centrepiece for entertaining.

Rule of thumb: the fire pit needs a clear circle of at least 1-3 m around it - free of structures, trees, fencing and dry vegetation - plus room for seating. Measure the space before you buy; a magnificent fire table is a mistake on a 3 m terrace.

Function

  • Casual s'mores nights: a compact propane or small wood bowl - ignite and enjoy, minimal prep.
  • Evening dining: a corten fire table lets you eat outdoors while staying warm.
  • Social evenings: smoke-reduced designs - double-wall construction or secondary combustion - cut smoke substantially, so guests can sit around for hours. Honest note: no wood-burning fire is 100% smoke-free; use dry, seasoned hardwood and keep the flame hot and clean to minimise smoke.

Fuel: Wood vs Propane

Factor Wood Propane
Ignition Kindling and time Instant
Burn time Long, refuellable Depends on tank size
Smoke Some, reduced with dry wood and smoke-reduced design None
Running cost Fuel cost only Tank refills
Storage Dry wood store, ash disposal Gas tank outside, hose/regulator checks, flame-failure device recommended
Heat High radiant heat Steady, controllable

Placement and Care

  • Place the pit on a non-combustible base: stone, gravel, concrete pad, or a protective heat barrier on wooden decks.
  • The steel surface becomes very hot in use and stays warm after the flame is out - warn children and pets.
  • Keep the bowl out of prolonged standing water; on paving, expect light rust runoff in the first months while the patina matures - rinse early stains with a hose and provide drainage.
  • Never leave a burning fire unattended; keep water or a fire extinguisher nearby.

Selection Checklist

  • Measured clear space for the pit plus 1-3 m clearance.
  • Primary use decided (cooking / warmth / entertaining).
  • Fuel chosen and storage arranged (dry wood or compliant tank location).
  • Non-combustible base installed before delivery.
  • Patina expectations understood - the colour will change over the first months, and that is part of the design.
