Benefits of Smokeless Fire Pits
- There are multiple benefits to using a smokeless fire pit, some of which are listed below.
- Smokeless fire pits improve overall fuel efficiency, meaning more heat is produced per log.
- It helps reduce smoke and odor (obvious, but important).
- Smokeless fire pits require less ash to clean up because most of the wood burns as fuel.
- As long as sufficient firewood is provided, smokeless fire pits provide a more consistent flame during the burning process.
- Most smokeless fire pits are portable and can be easily moved around the backyard or taken to the park or beach.

How do smokeless fire pits work?
As the fire heats up, all fire pits utilize the air around the logs + the heat from the growing fire to create primary combustion and burn the wood (this is the "fire triangle" of heat + oxygen + fuel). Conventional fire pits have lower air flow, resulting in slower, smokier fires in the primary burn. All that smoke is unburned fuel that is not getting enough heat and oxygen to burn.
The real advantage of a smokeless fire pit, therefore, is that it directs fresh air around the outside of the fire, where cool air enters at the bottom and rises upward, escaping near the top of the fire. The hot air mixes with the hot smoke, providing enough heat, oxygen, and fuel to create a secondary combustion or gasification that burns most of the smoke above the fire pit, giving firefighters a pleasant, low-smoke, beautiful flame.
Some people describe smokeless fires as "double flame" or "high flame" fires because the flames come directly out of the logs, but there are also flames that seem to start at the top of the fire pit and engulf it for several feet. You will usually see areas of smoke above the fire pit.
