Types of Corten Steel
There are mainly two common types of Corten steel:
Corten A: Corten A steel has relatively lower alloying element contents in some aspects. For example, the nickel content in Corten A is about 0.5% (and it does not strictly control the manganese content within a specific narrow range, usually in the range of 0.5-1.0%). It is suitable for some general outdoor applications where the corrosion environment is not extremely harsh.
Corten B: Corten B steel has relatively higher contents of certain alloying elements. The copper content in Corten B is around 0.20%, and the nickel content is increased to about 0.80%. Due to its higher alloying levels, Corten B generally has better corrosion resistance and mechanical properties compared to Corten A and is more suitable for use in more demanding environments, such as in coastal areas with high humidity and salt-laden air.
In addition to these two main types, there are also some modified or specialized Corten-type steels developed according to specific application requirements.
These may have additional alloying elements or different processing methods to further optimize their performance in specific fields, such as fire-resistant Corten steel that has improved high-temperature strength and fire-resistance properties for use in building structures where fire safety is a concern.
