Corrosion-Resistance Mechanism
When Corten steel is exposed to the atmosphere, it undergoes a series of chemical reactions that lead to the formation of a protective rust layer. The process can be described as follows:
Initial oxidation: In the presence of oxygen and moisture in the air, iron in the Corten steel begins to oxidize. The chemical reaction can be simply expressed as: 4Fe+3O2+6H2O→4Fe(OH)3. This initial rust layer is relatively loose and not very protective.
Influence of alloying elements: As the oxidation process continues, the alloying elements in the Corten steel start to play a role. Copper, chromium, nickel, and phosphorus interact with the iron oxides. For example, copper promotes the formation of a more stable and adherent oxide layer. Chromium forms a passive oxide film (Cr2O3) that has excellent corrosion resistance. The presence of phosphorus in the rust layer changes its structure, making it more compact and less permeable to oxygen and water.
Formation of a stable rust layer: Over time, a stable, dense, and adherent rust layer is formed on the surface of the Corten steel. This rust layer acts as a physical barrier, preventing oxygen, water, and other corrosive substances in the atmosphere from directly contacting the underlying steel matrix. The rust layer also has self - healing properties to a certain extent. If the surface is scratched or damaged, the underlying steel will start to oxidize again, and the alloying elements will promote the re-formation of a new protective rust layer.
The stable rust layer on Corten steel is different from the ordinary rust on common steel. The rust on common steel is porous and continuously thickens over time, leading to continuous corrosion of the steel. In contrast, the rust layer on Corten steel is compact and self-limiting, and the corrosion rate gradually decreases and stabilizes after the formation of the stable rust layer.
