Weathering steels, best known under the trademark COR-TEN steel, sometimes written without a hyphen as "weathering steels," are a group of steel alloys developed to eliminate the need for painting and to develop a stable rusty appearance when exposed to weather for several years. "Weather resistant" means that, due to their chemical composition, these steels exhibit a higher resistance to atmospheric corrosion than other steels. This is because the steel forms a protective layer on its surface under the influence of the weather. The corrosion inhibiting effect of the protective layer is produced by the specific distribution and concentration of the alloying elements in it. When subjected to weather, the layer protecting the surface develops and regenerates. In other words, the steel is allowed to rust to form a "protective" coating.
