The unique corrosion-resistant properties of Corten steel are mainly attributed to its specific chemical composition. The main alloying elements in Corten steel typically include:
Copper (Cu): Copper is one of the key elements in Corten steel, usually present in a range of about 0.2-0.5%. It promotes the formation of a protective rust layer on the surface of the steel. Copper ions can accelerate the oxidation process of iron, and the resulting oxide layer is more compact and adherent, which effectively inhibits further corrosion.
Chromium (Cr): Chromium content in Corten steel is generally around 0.4-1.25%. Chromium forms a passive oxide film on the steel surface. This film is very stable and can prevent the penetration of oxygen and water molecules, thereby enhancing the corrosion resistance of the steel.
Nickel (Ni): Nickel is often added in amounts up to about 0.65%. It helps to improve the overall corrosion resistance of the steel, especially in harsh environments. Nickel can also enhance the toughness and ductility of the steel, making it more suitable for various applications.
Phosphorus (P): Phosphorus is present in Corten steel at a level of approximately 0.07-0.15%. It has a beneficial effect on the corrosion resistance by promoting the formation of a dense rust layer. However, too much phosphorus can reduce the impact toughness of the steel, so its content needs to be carefully controlled.

Silicon (Si): Silicon is typically in the range of 0.25-0.75%. It contributes to the formation of a stable oxide layer and also improves the strength of the steel to a certain extent.
Manganese (Mn): Manganese content is generally 0.2-1.25%. Manganese can deoxidize the steel, improve its hot - working performance, and also play a role in enhancing the strength of the steel.
In addition to these main elements, there may be trace amounts of other elements such as vanadium (V), niobium (Nb), and titanium (Ti) in some Corten steel grades. These elements can further improve the microstructure and properties of the steel, such as grain refinement, which enhances the strength and toughness of the steel.
