Corten or weathering steel was created in the United States in 1939 and is an alloy that develops a natural layer of rust over time when exposed to the weather. The outer layer rusts and forms a protective layer that prevents the internal steel from degrading. Weathering steel is used all over the world. Notably, in the UK, one of our greatest landmarks is the Angel of the North, designed by Anthony Gormley, which is made of weathering steel. Other notable examples include the Picasso sculpture in Chicago and the Australian Museum of Old and New Art.

How well does your weathering steel weather?
1. In most cases, your weathering steel product will arrive without rust. It may have a slight patina or dark oily residue, which is completely normal.
2. As weathering begins, the residue breaks down and a rust color begins to appear. During this time, any runoff may contaminate the stone or concrete surface. 3.
3. After weathering (approximately 6-9 months), runoff may still occur, but to a very small degree.
When your weathering steel arrives, open the package immediately so that any moisture between the packages does not remain sealed. If this is not done, irregular rust and staining may occur.
